new book out

My new book, Raising the Stakes: E-sports and the Professionalization of Computer Gaming, is now out from MIT Press (& also available at Amazon). The book is based on my fieldwork over the years in the e-sports scene and explores the professionalization of high-end competitive play. I look at not just players, but the development of an e-sports industry that ranges from league operators to team owners, broadcasters, and commentators. I also spend time talking about spectatorship and audiences, as well as tournaments and rule structures in high-end play. The field of e-sports has seen some growing interest recently, both within and outside of scholarly communities, and this book is meant to help provide an overview, and history, into the scene as well as map out some core critical points going forward.
